State Rep. Steve Carra, R-Three Rivers, today released an emergency statement calling on people to withhold judgment after The Detroit News reported that a Whitmer appointee and Democrat donor spent $4,500 of taxpayer money on a coffeemaker after getting a $20 million grant from the state:
I want to urge everyone to calm down and withhold judgment. What we know so far is that one of Gov. Whitmer’s appointees spent $4,500 of taxpayer money on a Jura coffeemaker plus accessories including a cup warmer and milk cooler. What we don’t know yet is if the coffee from the $4,500 machine really tastes that much better. Maybe it does.
What we need to do is a series of blind taste tests. And none of this coffee-grounds-from-a-tin-can stuff, either. It’s a high-end coffeemaker, so for a fair test we need to use quality coffee: Italian or Kona.
Me personally, I don’t drink coffee, but if I did, it would probably be from Black Rifle Coffee Company. But that’s because I’m a man of the people.
Many are saying that spending $4,500 on a coffeemaker is an abuse of taxpayer money, and that the attorney general needs to investigate, and the state needs to immediately pull the funding.
I hear that. I voted against the appropriation, which was negotiated in secret. But let’s find out the facts before we rush to judgment. Let’s find out if the coffee from the $4,500 coffeemaker really tastes that much better. Maybe we’re all being too quick to condemn.
That is all.
