State Rep. Jay DeBoyer recently voted to advance legislation that will provide vital funding for recreational activities in St. Clair County.

A project within Senate Bill 817 will deliver waterfront access as part of ongoing development at North Channel County Park. The new park is along the Bridge to Bay regional trail and the Russell Island Loop that connects Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair. Planned improvements will include new restrooms, accessible pathways to a fishing pier, and an accessible paddle craft launch.

“As the weather gets nicer and summer is just around the corner, many people throughout our communities like to get outdoors with their families and enjoy the splendor of our great state,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “This project and outdoor area will make St. Clair County an even better place to live, work, and enjoy their time – and I will continue to fight for the best interests of the hardworking taxpayers of my community and the state of Michigan.”

The total cost of the project is estimated at $600,000, with $300,000 coming from the state’s Natural Resources Trust Fund and another $300,000 coming from a local match.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land – not general tax money – and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution.

The Natural Resources Trust Fund board approved its recommendations in December 2023 and the projects were approved with overwhelming support by the Michigan House of Representatives earlier this month. The measure will soon be presented to the governor for her expected signature.
