A proposal from state Rep. Jay DeBoyer honoring a fallen military hero from Chesterfield Township has been signed into law by the governor.

DeBoyer’s House Bill 4154, now Public Act 62 of 2024, designates a portion of M-3 in Macomb County from the intersection of Gratiot Ave. and 23 Mile Road to the end of M-3 as the Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason P. May Memorial Highway.

Born and raised in Chesterfield Township, Senior Chief May bravely served in the United States Navy for 18 years. He passed away unexpectedly at age 38 in June of 2015 while aboard the U.S.S. Essex, an amphibious assault ship which served in part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“This designation will allow people throughout our area to recognize and commemorate the sacrifice that Senior Chief May made for his country and fellow citizens,” said DeBoyer, of Clay Township. “We’re all incredibly appreciative and thankful for what he stood for, and I’m incredibly thankful that people will be able to see this marker and understand the immense courage and selflessness of Senior Chief May and so many others who serve in our Armed Forces. They put their lives on the line for us and our families.”

Senior Chief May’s father Phil, mother Pam and stepmother Theresa joined DeBoyer for testimony on the legislation in the House Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure Committee last year before it was unanimously advanced by the Michigan House and Senate. 

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state.
